Enders Family Reunion
August 10th, 2002
A NOTE FROM YOUR EDITOR THE REV. DR.
CECIL PAUL ENDERS POTTIEGER (1-7-5-3-2-7-2)
Every
late summer, when my wife and I drive up to the Enders Grove, I get a
sensation of joy mixed with a dose of nostalgia, about going where I have
gone ever since I was very little. Sometime in the early 30s, after we had
moved to Millersburg where Dad was assigned the pastorate of what is today
Grace United Methodist Church, Dad and Mother took us to this hallowed
place. Mother was Ruth Eva Enders (1897-1956).

I probably went to this wonderful family Grove earlier than that,, but we
lived in far-off Easton, PA from 1926-29 then, and quite likely, we did not
get there much, if at all. From my birth in Millersville, PA until the
Easton move, my recollections are tainted by a mental blur of infancy.
Going
to the Enders Grove each summer meant seeing cousins, uncles, aunts and
other relatives whom I didn’t often get to see. It meant being able to
run around that sylvan area, eating a picnic lunch with members of the
family, and meeting distant family members about whom I had heard my
parents speak in family conversation, but who only later became “real
persons” of the Enders family tradition.

The
events of September 11th, 2001 come very close to home. A time to
forge ahead and have a positive attitude, as our forefathers did, to lead them through tough
times.
As I sit here, November 22nd, 2001, after enjoying a great
Thanksgiving feast with our children, grandchildren and friends, I
can reflect on all the blessings we as Americans enjoy.
An article in today’s paper by Ann Landers, from
a lady in Australia to Bee in Fairfax, VA, says it all:
•
Be thankful for the clothes that fit a little too snug, because
it means you have enough to eat.
•
Be thankful for the taxes you pay, because it means you’re
employed.
•
Be thankful that your lawn needs mowing and your windows need
fixing, because it means you have a home.
•
Be thankful for all your heating bills, because it means you
are warm.
•
Be thankful for the space you find at the far end of the parking
lot, because it means you can walk.
•
Be thankful for the lady who sings off key behind you in church,
because it means you can hear.
|
•
Be thankful when people complain about government, because it
means we have freedom of speech. THESE FREEDOMS ARE BEING
TESTED! Are we up to the challenges? United we stand, divided
we will fall. The Enders Family Association needs to be united
as well as the country to be successful. PLEASE do your part when
called to help. The Civil War Book, “Captain Enders
Legion” is available for purchase, great gifts for your
children and friends. The Enders Grove has been winterized, grass is
mowed and leaves are mulched to fertilize the ground. Water has been
turned off and drained, swings and sliding board stored for the
year. Thanks to all
officers, committees, contributors and volunteers for making the
year 2001 a success. Mark
your calendars, next
Enders family Reunion is August 10th, 2002. Please help make it
a wonderful time by attending. Grove clean-up is April 27th,
2002. BEST WISHES
TO ALL, FOR A HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON!

THINGS" To

I’d
love for all of our readers who haven’t been to an ENDERS FAMILY REUNION
lately to experience these same vibrations?
While those of us who
do get to see 200-300 people at our annual gatherings in those delightful
days of August, we know that more than 1500 persons have over the years
paid that inexpensive
$5.00 membership fee. Maybe
we should raise the fee in an attempt to make membership more meaningful.
Or perhaps we need to meet on another date? (We did change from a later
date in August to the second Saturday in August so as not to conflict with
our children’s return to school. This
seemed to work, as many more started to attend when we made this change.)
But how about the rest of you who haven’t set aside that date for your
family’s annual
gathering? (August 10th, 2002 is the time for the next reunion - it will
be our 80th anniversary. Why not mark it down on your calendar
NOW?)

Attending the 2001 Reunion was the Kendish family from the Enders Family
Association in Australia. Grace is with her husband Norman and daughter,
Lisa.
The brief memorial service and business meeting begins at 1:30 PM. But
you can come any time in the morning and stay until late evening and enjoy
the fellowship of family and
friend; eat your lunch and dinner in the Grove’s Refreshment Stand on
the picnic benches and tables provided; make a visit to the site of the
home of Captain Philip Christian Enders and his family and the graves of
Philip and Appolonia and other family members (you can now drive
right up to the site); watch your children play games; listen to music in
the pavilion – just have a delightfully full day with your family and
friends.

Schaeffer, youngest children present at the 2001 Reunion.
Why
not relive the joy and excitement of the Annual Enders Reunion? Come early
and stay late. Bring your folding chairs just in case. And I almost forgot
to mention that the food served at the Grove is delicious and inexpensive
and the parking is FREE!
Children play games under the watchful eye of 1stAssistant
Secretary, Elaine Enders, at the 2001 Reunion.
Family members gather at the book table after registering at the
Reunion. Authors Russell Otten and Karl Schaeffer are selling copies of
their new book “Captain Enders Legion”.

A donation from you will help your officers to
get things done for the Association. Think about sending a check to Treasurer
Robert L. Enders TODAY!
Your Nominations Committee will soon be
searching for new officers. If
you are interested in becoming involved at any level, why not make a note of your interest and place it in the same
envelope? Or, speak to President Gene. Younger people should especially sign on as officers. By our
own admission, some of your present officers are getting older! Are you willing to serve?
Don’t forget that a "Porta-Potty"
will again be available during the Reunion!
Some thoughtful persons clip and send Enders
death notices to the editor when
they appear. This helps greatly as we come to the annual Memorial Service. Won’t
you become an ENDERS clipper?
Better to have 2 copies than NONE!
Buy copies of "Captain
Enders Legion" for
Christmas presents (see
page 5 for description and order blank.) Order one for each member of your
family ($35.00
each, plus $3.00 shipping and
handling).
Ruth Danner, wife of Bob Danner died on the day of the 2001 Reunion. We
extend our belated sympathy to Bob and his family.
Bob and Ruth contributed extra land several years ago so that the Trustees could
widen the driveway up to the site of the Immigrant Enders home and burial grounds. This gift will
remain as a monument to Ruth and Bob.
The 2002 reunion will be our 80th. Remember
the date; August 10th, 2002. Almost 300 attended the 2001 Reunion. LET’S MAKE IT 402 IN 2002!
Are you an ENDERS FAMILY ASSOCIATION
member? $5.00
per person will get you a lifetime membership with certificate.
Trustee Bill Wilbert reported that 53
more stumps had been removed
from
the Grove by Board action.
WHEN ATTENDING THE REUNION, remember to please sign
up with the registrar so that we have a
record of your attendance.
List ALL members of your family. And, do this before you order that great
"Enders food" at
the refreshment stand (this
is an
early reminder, we know, since the Reunion isn’t
until the second Saturday in August – August 10th,2002).
The 2001 Dauphin County Assessment for the Grove has been reduced
but
your officers are seeking for a larger reduction. Pray that it can be substantially reduced or even eliminated!
VOLUME II ($20) of the Enders
Genealogy is currently for sale.
It would be a GREAT time to buy genealogies for yourself and for members of your family. Other
Enders items will NOT be shipped but will be available at the Reunion
in August.

Dear Family Members and Special Friends: We thought you would appreciate the opportunity to purchase this historic family publication,
for present and future generations, in remembrance of the MANY sacrifices of our Civil War ancestors.
"CAPTAIN ENDERS LEGION" of 162 who served in the "War
of the Rebellion" The Civil War Service of The Descendants of Philip
Christian Enders and Elizabeth Enders Fahnestock (111
Enders descendants and 51 Fahnestock descendants).
On June 27, 1764, Captain Philip Christian Enders and
his wife Anna left their homeland in Germany and sailed on the English Ship
Jeneffer, bound for America. They arrived in Philadelphia on
November 5th of the same year. Philip had entered the German Army
during the Seven Years War (1756-1763), fighting in numerous battles,
serving under Prince Wilhelm Heinrich. He served with distinction, rose to the rank of Captain, and was
assigned to the Royal Guard, serving in the Royal Household of Prince Henry of
Nassau. The new roots of the Enders family in America would run deep with a
rich heritage that would be passed down from generation to
generation. To further express
his loyalty to his new country, Captain Enders served in
the American Revolution in the Pennsylvania Militia.
Also included are those descended from Elizabeth
Enders Fahnestock,
the sister of Captain Enders who journeyed with her brother on the same ship to the
same new land. Elizabeth later married Borius
Fahnestock of Ephrata, PA, son of Johann
Diedrich Fahnestock and
Ann
Margaretha Wirth Fahnestock and
they had 13 children.

The personal histories of 162 men
who experienced hardship, sickness, and death in a fratricidal four
year struggle are preserved in this book, so that their part in the
Civil War and the history of the United States won’t be forgotten
by future generations.
In addition to chronicling the Civil War service of
the descendants of Captain Enders and Elizabeth Enders Fahnestock, this
book also provides a great deal of genealogical information. The
majority of the veterans were from Pennsylvania, but others served
from Alabama, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Missouri,
New York, Ohio and Virginia. SURNAMES
INCLUDE: Ambrose,
Barry, Baughman, Bender, Bodder, Bonawitz, Bowman, Buehler, Chubb,
Cogley, Cooper, Culp, Eberly, Enders, Fahnestock, Foster, Fundenburg,
Good, Greegor, Haynes, Helt, Hemphill, Hinddman, Hoerner, Hoffman,
Hoover, Hubbard, Keiter,, Knouff, Knupp, Lebo, Limes, Loback, Lyter,
McColly, McLaughlin, Meckley, Miller, Minnich, Nace, Nice, Paul (Powle),
Peters,, Phillips, Plett, Reasner, Reed, Seagrist, Seal, Seiders,
Sheesley, Shoop, Snearly, Snyder, Straw (Stroh), Thornton, Tobias,
Tschopp,, Tyson, Warfel, Weber, Whitman, Wilbert, Woland, and
Zimmerman.
ALL ENDERS AND FAHNESTOCK KIN ARE CORDIALLY INVITED!
God bless all of you abundantly. Please
consider attending our 238th year in America reunion on August 10,
2002 in our "hallowed,
5-acres grove" in
Enders, PA, USA! (17 miles north of Harrisburg, PA near Halifax,
PA.)
